Helping and Linking Verbs

In this lesson the fourth graders met a guy named Isamare Waswere. We heard a story about Isamare. The point of the story was to learn the helping and linking verbs. These verbs are more difficult to identify in a sentence because they are not action verbs. By making our own Isamare stories it will be easier to find these verbs. They are: is, am, are, was, were, been, be, being, had, have, has, do, does, did, should, would, shouldn’t, wouldn’t, can, could.

Nine Centers of Agriculture

The fourth graders made the Nine Centers of Agriculture posters for our history. These posters showed the first food people grew and the first animals they raised. We learned this so we could understand where our food came from. Our favorite part of making the posters was coloring it.

Converting a Triangle to a Rectangle

The fourth-graders learned how to convert a triangle to a rectangle using a ruler and a protractor. There are two ways to make a triangle into a rectangle. The first way is using half the height and all of the base of the triangle. You can also use all of the height and half of the base. The purpose of this lesson is to learn how to make equivalent polygons from other polygons. Equivalent means different shapes that take up the same space (size) but not necessarily the same shape. We really enjoyed creating the equivalent rectangles.

Spirals

The Fourth Graders made a spiral out of equilateral triangles. When the height of the first larger triangle became the side of the next smaller triangle then the triangles have a special relationship. The smaller is ¾ of the larger. We learned to make the spiral to practice using a compass and ruler. We enjoyed making the spirals.
